We missed a pretty important birthday recently. It’s like showing up to a family gathering, only to realize it was for your favorite auntie’s birthday, and you have no card. Color us embarrassed.
Well, we want to rectify the situation. So, here’s a great big "Happy Birthday to You," to our old pal…Spam.
The first can rolled off the line at Hormel on July 5, 1937. Now, we know you are rolling your eyes; judging our humble pal. Despite what you may think of the mystery meat, there are 75 candles on that cake, er…loaf. Age demands respect.
At our most recent staff meeting, the question was posed, "Who’s reading Fifty Shades?"
Bashful expressions were exchanged and hands were reluctantly raised. Once the snickering died down, the book-talk began. While the story may be infamous at this point, what we actually take away from it varies tremendously.
Whether it’s, "Worst series ever," or "Actually, once you get past the first book, it’s kind of a sweet story," the jury is definitely still out.
We have a fun project here at the Claycomo Branch, and it may be heading to another Mid-Continent Public Library near you!
We are sending out collaborative journals. You can add your artwork, write a journal entry, a haiku...or, you can add a story. You can even finish our story. We started a tale, and you'll have to tell us if it's a spooky story with a monster-in-tow or wacky misunderstanding with humor for all. Below, you'll find our starter story with its cliffhanger, and you can comment here or add to the actual journals in the branches.
Did you watch the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on TV? It was a gala affair, and I caught some moments from the concert. As the resident Scot, you would expect no less of me.
Prince Charles' tribute to his mummy was a bit of alright, and it was grand to watch all these newly titled Sirs rock on stage, like Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney.
School is out for summer and that always sounds great the day before the semester ends. Just you wait. The boredom creeps in and before you know, you too will start to wish away the summer. That is, unless you take appropriate steps keep boredom at bay all summer long.
We can help. We have a pile-o-fun just waiting to be had at the library. The best part is... IT'S ALL FREE!
Obviously if you love reading, you love the library... at least we like to think so, and we thank you for that in advance. What about all of the other wonderful, FREE enticements? While we have the bestsellers and fun for the kids, the library might just be more than you are picturing.
If my childhood Memorial weekend memories were kept in bottle, they would separate like a lava lamp on the shelf. The color would split between the perfect blue of a summer sky and the murky green of the water of the Lake of the Ozarks, and it would have to smell like coconut tanning oil.
It’s that time of year! I remember May being the end of school and the beginning of MCPL’s Summer Reading Program. I loved MCPL’s Summer Reading Program and now your children can, too! The following are the guidelines for this year’s Summer Reading Program.
MCPL’s Summer Reading Program starts on May 21st. The Reading Program consists of two categories: Children and Teens.
The children’s theme for this year is “Dream Big...Read!” The children’s category is broken down into Listeners and Readers.
