With Gerald Dickens's recent visit to MCPL, we’ve been thinking about his illustrious ancestor, Charles Dickens. Christmas dinner is looming, and the guilt over the amount of food we ate just recently on Thanksgiving is still eating at us.
This may be a good time for a feel-good lesson courtesy of the Dickensian past.
Friday marks the end of National Novel Writing Month. Whether you participated as a writer, or just kept up with Alice's adventures as a reader, we thank you for playing along. We had lots of fun drumming up the characters, the setting, and the crime. While we only posted 7 chapters, below you will find the outlines for the rest of the story. We don't want to leave any reader hanging. Perhaps next year, we'll make the 30-day / 50k word mark.
By the time Carol made her way to Alice’s desk the next morning, her face was a solid fire engine red.
"Did you hear," she blurted to Alice.
"Carol, is your blood pressure off the charts again? I think you’d better sit down." Alice tried to guide Carol to a chair. She had dirt to dish, but Alice wasn’t sure she would keel over first.
Alice and her snooping are moving to the next level...
Chapter 6 Floundering Theories
"Why is it," Alice thought, "that every time she chose to cook in lieu of take-out, regardless of what she wanted to make, she always needed one more thing from the store."
Oh, the writer's block hit and finally lifted. Here is the next chapter. The plot thickens as more characters are introduced. Do you know who the bad guy is?
Chapter 5 Spotting the Bad Clam
The morning seemed to stretch on forever. Steven kept looking at the clock. Was it was really only 9:45 a.m.? Every time he looked up, he expected it to be 5:00 p.m. Disappointment loomed large on his horizon.
That Saturday was supposed to be quiet at the library.
At least, that’s what Alice Watson was trying to convince herself. Alice didn’t make it a point to work Saturdays at her library (because that’s how she thought of it – hers), but Carol needed this weekend off for the grandkids. And, with Halloween right around the corner, it seemed like everyone else had party plans, costumes to search for, and decorating to finish up.

This Saturday, October 13th from 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m., we will have our event and the list of enticements just keeps getting longer.
In addition to our speakers, the literature, and wellness check, we will have a yoga demonstration and merchant fair. We will have two massage therapists giving chair massages. We will have refreshments from Starbucks, Hy-Vee, and Classy Chocolates of Liberty.
