One of my favorite comic book icons is back on the big screen this summer: that felonious figure of feline femininity, Catwoman. This princess of purr-fidy has been beguiling and baffling Batman since 1940, when she first appeared as a jewel thief known as The Cat. But even after all these years, our favorite femme fatale is still leaving claw marks on pop culture.
At the end of last summer, I decided I was not going to feed my Hummers this year. (Yes, they are mine, because every summer they return and hover in front of the windows in my sunroom to let me know they are back.) Last summer I could not keep their feeders filled fast enough. I was fixing solution nearly every day and fighting to keep the ants and wasps out of their feeders--not to mention the Downey Woodpeckers that enjoyed a sweet drink during the day.
Cats love people who love books. That's my theory, anyway. I have two cats, who both want to be close when I'm reading. Or, maybe, they want to be close to me and I'm always reading. One will be in my lap and one across my shoulders. It is possible that I'm occupying their favorite chair, but I prefer to believe they love it when I read. So my best wishes to anyone who has a cat who loves a reader.
When a loved one loses their short term memory, some funny things can happen. My brother had good news to share with Mom; he's going to be a dad! So he told her, and she was overjoyed Then, he told her a few minutes later, and she was overjoyed again. So, it's not all bad, and we are learning to love her in a new way. When the present becomes a tough place to be, we ask Mom to tell us a story about the past-- say, when she and my Dad met. She can still tell a good story. So getting old really isn't for cowards, and my Mom is brave as they come.
A new program starting in Buckner this summer is a Family Fun Night. It's geared at boys and girls ages 8-15 and meets every Thursday night from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. This program was created to provide boys and girls in the community, and their parents, a night to have fun by offering a variety of games they can participate in together in a safe environment. At the end of the evening, a mentoring session will be held by the police or fire department on different topics with the boys and girls.
Every story has two sides. Sure, it’s an old platitude, but it’s also true of some of our favorite classics. If you’ve ever been dissatisfied by the ending of a book everyone else seems to love, maybe you should read it from another point of view. Try one of these "other side" stories to get fresh perspectives on old tales.
