You know, it’s pretty common at this time of year to assemble some books that you’d like to read over the summer. This year, though, I encourage you to create a list of just one book—that you want to write. Welcome to Camp Nanowrimo!
Camp Nanowrimo is a pared down version of November's novel-in-a-month Nanowrimo challenge. There’s the same word count goal and same month-long deadline, just with none of the November. In 2012, there are two sessions of Camp: in June and August.
Summer is upon us, and school is letting out! What will you do with your kids? Just an FYI, we’ll still be having storytimes during the summer. Boardwalk will take a hiatus from May 22nd to June 5th, but then we’ll be resuming for a summer full of storytelling, crafts, movies, and songs. Check out our storytime schedule, sign up for Summer Reading Program, and check out our other programs. And, it’s all free!!
On Thursday, July 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Boardwalk Branch will be hosting a blood drive for the Red Cross.
The Red Cross does not need blood— PATIENTS do. Every two seconds, someone in America gets a blood transfusion; Every TWO SECONDS! Five million patients will need blood this year. Please help us to help patients in need by signing up for your appointment right here at the Boardwalk Branch to have your blood drawn.
The American Red Cross asks the following of a donor:
Do you love something? I am kind of at the age where I don’t love too many things. I love my family and friends, but I’ve reached the stage when I know loving people is where my heart is and getting attached to materialistic things doesn’t matter; well not too much, unless we’re talking crock-pots.
Many people believe that knitting is done with scratchy, itchy wool from sheep. Years ago, this was indeed the case. Since World War II, however, this fact has changed. Yes, sweaters, scarfs, mittens, skirts, dresses, etc. have for the most part been knitted out of wool obtained from sheep; and yes, sometimes it had not been cleaned enough to be soft. Now, one can pay ridiculously high prices for natural wools with little bits of twigs or burrs left in them.
Our next meeting will be May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. We did not have many ladies or gentlemen at our April gatherings. However, that did not stop the flow of work being accomplished. One lady finished a cable knit hat, which was worked on size 3 needles. It was so tiny, and the design came out beautifully. She is now working on a pair of thigh high leg warmers for her sister, a ballerina. Another lady just stopped by to find out some more about our group and seems quite enthusiastic about our afternoon session.
5k, 10k, marathon, triathlon, oh my! It’s getting to be that time of year again when everyone seems to be using an athletic event to raise money or encourage fitness. This year I plan to challenge myself with a few races, including a triathlon. People may think I am crazy for committing to training for a race that includes swimming, biking, and running, but I like to think I am up for the challenge. I have armed myself with books on how to train and prepare for a triathlon. All from my local library! Challenge yourself this year and make a goal of trying something new with your fitness.
Do you catch yourself day dreaming about summer? I think everyone does from time to time, and everyone for sure dreams of being on summer break! This summer, plan to be involved with your kids in our Summer Reading Program. The program begins May 21st and ends July 31st. You will be able to sign up online after May 21st, or go to your local branch to sign up. Be sure to look at which of our 3 programs (Listener, Reader, or Teen) is the most appropriate for your child. Come and Dream Big @ your Library and READ this summer. Now wake up from your daydream!
There are only so many days in the year that you get to celebrate events that haven’t happened yet, and today is one of them. I’m pleased to announce that today is First Contact Day!
