Fascinating Facts

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

According to scientists, tomatoes are fruits because they have seeds. But thanks to an 1893 U.S. Supreme Court decision, tomatoes are vegetables.

The Court ruled that it didn't matter what scientists said. People think of tomatoes as vegetables and eat them with the main part of dinner. Fruits are eaten as desserts. The Court said, since nobody has a tomato for dessert, it has to be a vegetable.

Classic Literature?

Anyone who knows me has heard me say, "The movie was okay, but the book was great!"

I find this to be true in almost every instance except classic literature. I have seen so many versions of Pride and Prejudice, but I have never read the book. Each time I pick it up to read, I can’t get past the language and the tiny print.

The French Are Fabulous

I’ve loved all things French since… well, ever since I can remember. I would check out the book, Fun with French, from the Library and scour its pages, even though I had no idea what it said and no one I knew could tell me. Unfortunately, the Library no longer owns that book, though they do own many others that inspire me and make me long to return to France…

Meet Rachael Ray

I’m usually pretty leery of cookbooks written by celebrity chefs. After all, many of them include fancy dishes that require lots of preparation time. However, I really enjoy the cookbooks by Food Network star, Rachael Ray. Her books are filled with quick and easy recipes for delicious, everyday meals. Everyone knows Rachael Ray. Her constant smile and fun, energetic personality have made her one of the Food Networks biggest draws. In 2006 she launched her magazine, Everyday with Rachael Ray, and in 2007, she started hosting her own syndicated daily talk show.

Call the Midwife

Many have been watching this PBS series on Sunday evenings and learning about life in the London slums during the 1950s as seen through the eyes of the young nurse-midwives serving families during the post-WW II era. At the age of 21, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in post war London's East End slums.

Have You Ever Tickled a Tiger?

Have you ever tickled a tiger? Have you ever poked a penguin? Have you ever nudged a hedgehog?

These are all lines from the book Have You Ever Tickled a Tiger by Betsy E. Snyder. My son loves this cute and colorful touch and feel book. He’s even figuring out how to use his little fingers to turn the pages, and we’ve read many times. I’m sure there are lots of other moms that can quote a book just from reading it over and over.

Girls' Day Out at the 2013 Romantic Times Booklovers Convention

Last weekend my friends and I had a "girls' day out." We met for brunch, and then all seven of us climbed into my sister-in-law's minivan to go to the 2013 Romantic Times Booklovers Convention here in Kansas City! Courtesy of our library cards, we went to the Giant Book Fair event for free! We collected autographs from favorite authors, discovered some new reading material, got our picture taken with some book cover models, and had a fabulous time!
