National German-American Day is October 6. It’s been celebrated since 1987 in honor of the first German settlement in the colonies. In 1683, several families from Krefeld, Germany settled in Pennsylvania and founded Germantown. In honor of the holiday, I decided to look up German-American authors. Here are a few of them:
Recently, I blogged about literary one-hit wonders, so I thought I would follow that up with music one-hit wonders. While the list is years long and decades wide, there is one song from the 1980s that always comes to my mind, not because it is my favorite but because I still hear it being played in a variety of venues.
Someone I know recently had an encounter with Bigfoot. They didn’t actually see Bigfoot, but heard some strange noises and found huge footprints on their property. There have been hoaxes throughout the years, but personally, I find the idea of such a creature existing very exciting. Whether you call it Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, the Abominable Snowman, or Momo, there have been sightings worldwide of these giant apelike creatures. Could all of these people been mistaken about what they’ve seen? Possibly, but I hope not.
I have lived in the River Market for over a year now, and I have yet to explore the history of the place. I always hear stories of how pivital the River Market area was to industry growth in Kansas City, but I want specifics.
You’ve heard all the facts. You’ve seen the commercials. You’ve decided now is the time… the time to quit smoking. Come join others who have made this same very important decision. The program Freedom from Smoking, will be starting Monday September 10, 2012 at the Blue Springs North Branch. This program will meet one day a week for one hour from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for seven weeks. Participants will be encouraged to work on the process of quitting smoking.
I don’t know about you, but there are times when my kids ask for homework help and, instead of being able to offer any sort of intelligent guidance, my brain just glazes right over. This especially happens when they show me anything even remotely related to geometry or algebra. Thankfully, summer break provided a nice respite from my confusion, but now that school is back in session, I know hours of homework are lurking just around the corner.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. This month is a time to remind parents and children that a library card is one of the most valuable cards they will ever need. A library card can connect you to the world of information.
Jack the Ripper, or Saucy Jacky as he liked to refer to himself. Everyone knows the name. Images of a faceless man dressed in a black top hat and cloak lurking the dank and dirty streets of London come to mind. Who was he? Will we ever know? If you are like me and think this story of murder and mayhem is fascinating, then please read on. If not, stop here; you don’t want to go any further.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu a happy birthday. Who is Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, you ask? You might know her by another name, Mother Teresa. She was born August 26, 1910 in Albania. If she was still alive, she would be 102 years old. Unfortunately, she died September 5, 1997 at the age of 87 after several years of failing health.
Fall is just around the corner, and with its arrival, the Blue Springs North Branch will be offering some fun and unique programs. The following are just a few of those programs. Check out our Events page for a full listing for our branch (or any others).
