Mysterious Thoughts on a Thursday

2013 has gotten off to a great start with a book everyone agreed is worthy of 5 magnifying glasses! Thursday’s Mystery Book Club discussed Hardball by Sara Paretsky. Vic Warshawski takes on a 40 year old missing person’s case. Lamont Gadsden was involved in the race riots of the sixties and disappeared soon after a young girl was killed during King’s march through the park. Little does she know how this will snowball out of control.

Pitchers and Catchers Report

My four favorite words to warm a winter’s day. Do you realize that the Royals have added four starting pitchers this winter: Ervin Santana, Jeremy Guthrie, James Shields, and Wade Davis?

A new pitching staff will arrive in Surprise, Arizona on February 11th. They have also acquired an "X-man," Xavier Nady. Spring training starts in less than seven weeks.

Who is Alexander Majors?

Alexander Majors was born in 1814 in Kentucky. He came to Missouri with his family at the age of five. Shortly after moving to Missouri, his mother was injured in a fall; she died a year and a half later.

Majors became a Cass County farmer and married Katherine Stallcup. They had five daughters and two sons. Because he felt the farm wasn’t supporting them, he went into the freight trading business in 1848.

In December, Thursday’s Mystery Book Club discussed Under Orders by Dick Francis. From what I’ve read on Francis, it doesn’t sound like he ever intentionally set out to write a Sid Halley series. If an idea came up for a book that he thought fit Sid, then Sid became the main character. So, if you read the Sid books in order, you’ll find big gaps in his life.

What's the Difference between Fiction and Nonfiction?

This is a common question that I’ve been asked. I’ve often heard it explained that fiction is something made up, whereas nonfiction is true. According to the dictionary, this is correct, but in the Library, the definition of nonfiction is slightly different. In our nonfiction section, you will find fairy tales, books touting cures for various illnesses, Shakespeare’s plays, poetry, jokes, and books about alien abductions (just to name a few things). Not all of these things would pass a "true" test.

Can You Guess Clue #2:

Gee, during the cold winter months, some "Koko" would really be "Yum-Yum" while reading one of this author’s books.
