Imagine this: a kitchen filled with the seasonal, mouth-watering scents of chili bubbling on the stove or a spicy applesauce cake baking in the oven. Is your mouth watering yet? Mine is! Must be time to do some cooking! Check this out: the library has recipe books galore for your cooking pleasure!
Does loving a dog make us more human? This is one of the questions that Steven Winn, author of Come Back, Como: Winning the Heart of a Reluctant Dog, answers in his book. As a self-proclaimed dog lover, I was instantly drawn to the sweet picture of Como on the cover of this book, and fell in love with Como and his family as I read.
Tuesday night, I saw Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings for the first time. I had never even heard of them, but my husband was really enthusiastic about attending. So, we left home early in search of good general admission seats. I will be the first to admit that my musical horizons could always use some expansion, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this group, whom I could gather few clues about from their name. Obviously, Sharon Jones would entertain us with her vocal styling, and there were several members of royalty to back her during the show.
Go green! Are you doing your best to protect our planet? Are you recycling household items for repurpose? For instance, did you know that you can take a 2 liter pop bottle and create “Bundle of Joy” bottles? Or make a “Good Scent” sachet out of fabric dryer sheets?
Did you know that catapults can fire projectiles up to 1,300 feet, or that many ancient civilizations including the Romans, the Greeks, and the Chinese used catapults in warfare? These are just a couple of the interesting things our Discovery Club learned at last week's tween program, Catapult Craze.
Summer will be over so soon? Summer never lasts as long as I would like. Gardening plans or ideas and outdoor projects soon have to end because winter is coming. It is time to start thinking of inside projects. I have started organizing my home room by room. One room at a time! Believe me, I am starting to feel less cluttered!
This year Banned Books Week is September 25th – October 2, 2010. The purpose of Banned Books Week is to spread awareness of having free information in the library. I have always loved the library because it is a place of information – whether to find a good book to read, an audiobook to listen to, a movie to watch, or to find information on a subject that I want or need to learn more about. It is not always the classic item that is challenged or banned. Sometimes, it is some of the most popular items, too.
