Spend a Fun Hour With the Dearborn Book Club

The book club at the Dearborn Branch meets the second Tuesday of each month.  Our next meeting will be September 14th, 2010 at 4 p.m.  We are a congenial group and would love to have you join us.  We truly get to know each other and have become good friends.  As well as talking about the book, we often find out about the circumstances in which the book was written and look deeper at the author.  At many meetings, there are extra stories shared, as well as talking about the book.  We recently acted out a mystery game, complete with costumes that matched the char

Goodbye Dog Days Of Summer: Hello Football and Chili

Although the expression “the dog days of summer” has nothing to do with dogs, dogs have the right ideas about how to endure the sultry days of summer: pant and lie as flat on the ground as possible to avoid the heat.

Pa and Peyton Graduate From Storytime for Toddlers

One of my favorite responsibilities at the North Independence Branch is Storytime for Toddlers. Thursday mornings, I have the pleasure of playing and reading with young children, age 18-36 months. We have a great time building lifelong learners and readers, see why I love my job! It takes a grand commitment for "adult lap buddies" to bring their toddler every week. Pa has been bringing his grandchildren for "years and years", and now Pa has graduated with his last grandchild, Peyton, in tow.

What Are These Silly Bandz?

“I’ll trade you a Glow-in-the-dark Dinosaur for a pink set of grapes?”

“How about a drum set for a neon pair of sunglasses?”

These are just some of the conversations that have been overheard as people discuss the ever growing fad of Silly Bandz!!!

I, myself, find this need to acquire shaped, small, rubber bands to be highly juvenile. Needless to say, I can’t stop collecting them!

Things I've Discovered While Working At the Library, Part 2: Fela Kuti

I've always been something of a music geek. Working at the library means I see a lot of CDs.  I keep an eye out for artists that I have never heard, just so I can give them a listen.

Derider, Declawed, and Converted

It does not seem all that long ago that some people viewed audiobooks with derision, unless, of course, they were motivational, inspirational, or “How To” audios like "How to Make a Ton of Money in 30 Days or Less". Sad to say, I was one of those unenlightened, narrow-minded readers who believed fiction should ALWAYS be read, NOT listened to. Who knew what a wide range of scenarios these books would fit in?
