Zombie Lovers Book List
March 11, 2011
I looooove zombies, and I looooove books. It just seems fitting to put together a zombie book list! Here are some great titles that Mid-Continent Public Library carries. Come in to our South Independence Branch to check out our cool display!
Zombie Queen of Newbury High by Ashby - Mia never had it so good ... she's dating super hottie Rob-the-football-god, and he's taking her to prom! To keep Ms. Popularity away from him, Mia decides to cast a love spell. It has the unfortunate side effect of turning the entire student body into zombies, which could be worse, since they've made her their leader. Zombie hunter Chase, however, is afraid it's because they are hoping to fatten her up for the kill. Better not wear white to prom, because things could get very messy...
Brains: A Zombie Memoir by Becker - There are upsides to being an intellectual when the zombie apocalypse comes ... Dr. Barnes can even think! He can write! He is convinced that his condition can bring about the peaceful coexistence of the two species, if only he can convince the creator of the zombie virus. On a cross-country trek to find him, he meets up with others who have special abilities: super speed, limb reattachment, the ability to speak, and even sharp shooting! They set off in search of equality.
Zombies vs. Unicorns by Nix - An age-old question: which is superior - zombie or unicorn? In this anthology, short stories illustrate both sides. Including contributions from some of today's bestselling teen authors, this collection runs the gamut from evil man-eating unicorns, to zombies in love.
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Brooks - In this alternative future, the Zombie War has nearly eradicated humanity. The author has recorded testimony from survivors who have come face-to-face with the living dead. This powerful document is a history of the undoing of society as we know it. From eyewitness accounts of 'Patient Zero' found in the United Federation of China, to the ineffectiveness of the U.S. Army against the hordes, to the Supreme Allied Commander of Europe discussing the futility of retaliation.
The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From the Living Dead by Brooks - This practical guide is a key component for surviving against the undead, who even now, may be planning your demise. It includes information about zombie physiology, behavior, defense tactics and weaponry, how to protect your home, and ways to adapt to new terrain. Brooks urges readers to organize, be fearless, be smart, use weapons with little upkeep, avoid careless mistakes, keep moving, and be ever vigilant.
Breathers: A Zombie's Lament by Browne - Andy is recently deceased ... perhaps recently undead would be a better way to put it. He no longer fits in with his family, friends, or the society of the living. He's having a tough time adjusting, and decides to go to Undead Anonymous. It's there that he meets sexy Rita and quirky Jerry: two others dealing with the aftermath of death not being the final frontier. The group meets a rogue zombie, who teaches them the pleasures of (eating) flesh, which sets off a journey toward self-discovery that will keep you laughing. You'll love this "rom-zom-com" (romance zombie comedy).
Zombies: The Recent Dead by Guran - This collection of zombie stories is written by some of my favorite authors: Kelly Link, Neil Gaiman, Max Brooks, Francesca Lia Block ... if that doesn't recommend it, let me also mention that it includes a western story, some romance, and super cool transformed high school students.
Paul is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion by Goldsher - Yes, this is what you think it is, a zombie Beatles story! It begins with zombie Lennon killing and bringing back Paul. They add George and Ringo (a Seventh Level Ninja Lord) to the mix, and they are soon off on a tour of mayhem and music. Watch out for zombie hunter extraordinaire, Mick Jagger!
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Grahame-Smith - In this mash-up, the popularity of which spawned several copycats, Austen's beloved Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are masterful slayers of the dreadfuls. Their budding romance is frequently interrupted by Mr. Darcy's pride, zombie attacks, the unfortunate state of the Bennets' neighbor, and the insolence of Lady Catherine De Bourgh. Now with even more ultraviolent mayhem... (There is also a prequel, Dawn of the Dreadfuls)
Creepy Cute Crochet: Zombies, Ninjas, Robots, and More! by Haden - In the style of amigurumi (basically really cute crochet creatures from Japan), comes something a little more edgy. From zombies to Cthulhu to skeletons to Medusa, this is sure to impress any crafting zombie lover. It features full color photos and visual instructions, as well as detailed written instructions. I would recommend this for someone who is a bit past the beginner stage, and has a general grasp of basic crochet stitches.
Rot & Ruin by Maberry - Benny was a baby when First Night hit. All he remembers of his mother is being handed off to his brother Tom ... who he blames for deserting her. Everyone else thinks Tom is some tough 'zom' killer. After several failed attempts to find a job, he decides to take up the family business - namely, hunting zoms. Travelling in the Rot and Ruin, his opinions change. Zoms aren't the worst monsters out there.
Zombie Haiku by Mecum - From the early days of the plague, the author documents in his journal the darkest hours of civilization. Using a haiku style, the narrator tells of his journey through the wasteland.
Sabriel by Nix - In a land plagued by Necromancers who raise the dead to do their bidding, one called Abhorsen fights against the Dead Hands. Sabriel's father is the current Abhorsen, but he is missing. She sets out to locate him with Mogget, a magical cat, who is bound to the Abhorsen by magic. To aid them, her father has sent his bells and his sword. She must journey to the Old Kingdom to save him, and stop the evil that threatens to overtake the land. This is the first book in a trilogy.
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Ryan - Mary's life has always been planned for her. The Sisterhood upholds the traditions, and the Guardians protect the village from the Unconsecrated that live outside the fence. Her biggest problem is who she's going to marry. Then everything starts falling apart. Her mother gets infected, and suddenly her world is turned upside down. Things that she always believed true are called into question, and she has to start making her own decisions. This is the first in a trilogy.
Zombie Felties: How to Raise 16 Gruesome Creatures From the Undead by Tedman and Skeate - For those who prefer a needle and thread, we bring you a collection of felt creatures sure to bring you and your friends back from the dead. Average construction time is less than an hour each. All patterns include full color photographs as well as illustrated and written instructions.
