The Work I Love

August 27, 2012

Because I love books and people, I have found my job in the Library to be the perfect place for me. I enjoy helping people locate just the right book to read or learn how to print something on the computer. My grandchildren living in Liberty often call and ask me to get certain books for them. They think I am their own personal librarian! I find so much pleasure in having a customer return a book I recommended and tell me how much they enjoyed reading it. Sometimes, they bring it back and say thanks, but I really didn’t like this book. That’s okay also.

At a recent event in our community, I discovered that customers look to us for help, even when we are not behind the desk! During our parade, a customer and I discussed the Library and offered me a small suggestion for improvement. As we were listening to a local band, another customer pulled a slip of paper out of his wallet to ask me, if he came in, could we help him find this book. I was pushing my granddaughter on the park swings and a 4th grader recognized me from the Library. He then began to ask me all about using the Internet in the Library. I didn’t mind this "shop talk" because I am glad that customers look on us as friends with whom they can have a discussion.

Our library system has many services to offer to our communities. Whether its DVDs for Family Video Night, help downloading to a Nook or Kindle, learning a new skill through the Online Learning program, or finding just the right book, the people who work for MCPL are willing to help. I’ve been referred to as "one of the Library Ladies." It’s a title that I love.

Me too! I love Library work. I've been employed in Library systems for over 23 years and still going strong.
