The Word Game
June 12, 2013
Do you ever get tired of using the same words when there are so many great words to choose from in the English language? Here’s a fun game that you can play with your kids, friends, other family members, and co-workers. Choose a word of the day, and see how many times you can work it into a conversation. It has to be used correctly though. The most popular online dictionary, dictionary.com, makes it easy by offering a word of the day along with the definition. It is also available as a free app, formatted for Android, Windows, or Apple operating systems.
Vocabulary is an early literacy skill. Children quickly learn that everything has a name and that even ideas and feelings have words associated with them. The cool thing about vocabulary is that it is an unconstrained skill. There is no limit to the number of words a person can learn, and they can continue to learn words their whole life! It is an important skill for young children because the more words they know when they start school, the easier it will be for them to read AND to understand what they are reading. Another great way to increase your child’s vocabulary is by reading picture books together. Many picture books contain rare words that aren’t used in everyday language.
Also, the Blue Ridge Branch offers a Preschool Storytime every Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. During storytime, we try to learn at least three new words.
