Woodneath Library Center Unveiled
May 30, 2013
Our newest library is complete, and we welcome you to come enjoy a day of ideas and ice cream as we explore all the features of the new building. On Saturday, June 22, MCPL will open the doors to the Woodneath Library Center, located in the Shoal Creek area of Kansas City, Missouri. The grand opening will take place at 8900 NE Flintlock Road with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m.
Located on the pre-Civil War Woodneath estate, the new branch will serve one of the fastest growing parts of the greater Kansas City area. The Shoal Creek area’s population has grown by 75% since 2000, and MCPL’s neighboring Liberty Branch has seen the effect of that growth. In 2010, the Liberty Branch was the Library’s busiest location, having seen huge increases in circulation and visitors over the previous decade.
Grand opening activities include:
- Ribbon-cutting ceremony
- Live petting zoo
- Ice cream social
- Special performances from local entertainers
- Storytime crafts and activities
The opening of the Woodneath Library Center marks the closing of Phase I of the three-phase Woodneath Project. Phase II revolves around the preservation and the adaptive reuse of the homestead and creation of a humanities-based Story Center are at the heart of MCPL’s vision and will be fully funded outside of MCPL’s funds. The Story Center will celebrate the art of story creation and sharing in its traditional and modern forms including, oral storytelling, written storytelling, and digital storytelling.
MCPL partnered with the students of South Valley Middle School to host a promotional video contest for the grand opening of the Woodneath Library Center. We are pleased to congratulate Olivia and Emily as the Overall Winners of the Contest! View their submission below!
