Won’t You Take Me To…

February 27, 2013

So, the weather still isn’t cooperating for outdoor activities and you are getting cabin fever? One way to get some of that excess energy out is to head over to a dance club in Kansas City called Funky Town. Here you will find a unique dancing experience.

The music is a mix of danceable songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The crowd ranges in age from some twenty-somethings up to sixty-somethings and perhaps even older (I don’t ask, don’t tell!). The best thing about the crowd is that it's not the typical boy-girl dance club. Some people dance in groups, some in pairs, and some even dance by themselves. A majority of the crowd is just there to dance and have fun. They don’t care if you are a good dancer or a bad one, as long as you aren’t flailing around so much you hurt someone!

If, however, you wish to improve your dancing moves, you could check out a video or book from MCPL such as You Can Disco by Jennifer Meloney. You can also find some disco music to download for free on Freegal – the music download site provided free by the Library. For a start, try downloads from the album The World’s Greatest 70s Disco. The song "Car Wash" in particular is a good choice because if you stay at Funky Town long enough, you will be there when the car wash brushes come down and the soap bubbles hit the dance floor.

So, for something fun and perhaps a bit different to do, try out Funky Town. Just be sure to make a reservation. It may be a well-kept secret in Kansas City, but  those who have been there often, return and return often. It can get crowded, loud, and pretty funky.
