The Winter of My Discontent

February 02, 2012

Today is Groundhog Day, and the famous Pennsylvania woodchuck has seen his shadow and proclaimed that we will have 6 more weeks of winter.

The way this winter's weather is going in our area, who's going to fuss about 6 more weeks of mild temperatures and sunny days?

Though I do respect the prevailing opinion that any snow is a bad thing, I miss our snowy winters. I know this definitely puts me in the minority. And truly, I do hate it when I have to drive to work on snowy or icy roads. That is the worst! But I would like to have a little snow here and there--maybe 2 or 3 inches so I can enjoy it and take some good photos outside. Please?!

I've been watching Gary Lezak's Snowflake Contest on the local news. The idea of the contest is to guess the date when we will get one inch of snow in the Kansas City area (I think at the Plaza). He started this year's contest with over 5,000 entries. Now, there are only 10 entries left. Wow! In December 2011 and January 2012, we have received only .4 inches of snow. That is hardly enough snow to leave tracks in with your sled runners!

I know I'm in the minority here, but please let's get at least one good snowfall this year! Don't our kids need at least one snow day off school?
