Why Do the Dutch Wear Wooden Shoes?
June 10, 2013
Most of Holland lies below sea level, so it is very marshy and damp. The proper name for Holland actually is Netherlands, which means "low lands." The farmers found that wooden shoes were useful when it came to walking on the marshy ground. They kept their feet from getting wet and didn't get ruined like leather shoes. Dutchmen "Klompen" dance in their wooden shoes, but they are mostly worn by farmers or nursery owners, as they are quite noisy to wear.
