What's On Display?
October 15, 2012
The Smithville American Legion Post 58 has organized a display in the lobby of the Library. The display will be set up during the month of October. We're proud to have an active Legion Post in Smithville with nearly 200 members. A multidisciplinary display focuses on the Ladies Auxiliary, The Sons of the American Legion, the newly formed Legion Riders, and Legion Veteran Members. The Post 58 commitment to Veterans, Active Duty Military members, and the Community is formidable.
The American Legion Post 58 supports the Girl & Boy Scout programs in Smithville, and sends Smithville representatives to Boys State and Girls State each year. Packages of necessity items and comfort food are sent to Smithville Military members who are deployed overseas. The post helps local families of military members while spouses are away, and give holiday meals and toy baskets to the families at Christmas. The post organized a community band this past summer, and they will present free concerts next summer in Kearney and Smithville. Blood Drives are held throughout the year at the Legion Hall, and fundraising meals are served on a regular schedule by the Sons and the Auxiliary.
Legion members greet soldiers returning home and WWII honor flight veterans as they land at KCI airport. Flags are put up throughout Smithville on holidays and for soldiers coming home to show them that the Smithville Community honors their service and sacrifice while stationed in harm's way. The legion also hosts the annual Memorial Day program and sets flags on veteran's graves each year. The food pantry is on the list of support from the Legion Family. The Post 58 Honor Guard leads the Octoberfest Parade each year and is humbled to serve the families of deceased veterans with grave site funeral honors.
The legion hall provides a smoke free environment for family reunions, graduation parties, wedding receptions, and meetings. Post 58 welcomes new members to its family. Anyone interested in joining is asked to call Dewayne Knott at 816.868.5343 and inquire about membership.
Come in and enjoy our display, and please remember to join us on Saturday, October 20 for our Veterans Salute.

Veterans Salute
The displays at the library are always intersting. I attended the Veterans Salute on October 19 and it was awesome. Lots of exhibits and things to see and learn about. Thanks to the Smithville Library staff and the volunters from other MCPL libraries who made it possible. A big THANKS to the American Legion for helping make it happen.

That is great work by the American Legion Post. Does the library support veterans too? How many veterans work in the library? Do they get a hiring preference?
Thanks
