What's the Beep?

November 11, 2010

Do you notice the beeping sounds in the MCPL, or have you heard them so often you’ve lost awareness. More than just an indication that someone is working, the beeps indicate that something specific is happening at the library. When a book is checked in—beep. When a book is checked out—beep. When a fine is paid. When a hold is placed. When changes are made to patron records. The machine even beeps when something is attempted that isn’t quite right, or if the wrong action is selected on the screen. So, if the beeps ever become annoying, just remember that each one indicates action being taken on behalf of the patrons of the library. Think of it as clerical music, all concluded with the whirring motor of the receipt printer when everything is done.
