What Would You Do If the World Was Ending Today?
March 11, 2014
That’s the question Justin Gardner put to twelve of his fellow Kansas City filmmakers to peak their interest in a wild idea. Justin wanted to produce a free web series. He imagined twelve short films, one released each month.
No hope. No tomorrow. No consequences.
Those were the only conceptual guidelines given to the writers and directors asked to collaborate on the project.
Justin didn’t have trouble finding enthusiastic, local filmmakers. The trouble came with funding the project. One of the many interesting pages on the website, Withered World, is the backstory of Justin’s crowdfunding adventure. If you’ve never visited the website, Kickstarter.com, you’ve got to check it out. Basically, Justin and his collaborators cast their idea out into the "eVerse" on Kickstarter and asked people to send them money. It worked!
The results are very cool and fascinating to watch. Each film, less than 10 minutes long, uses local actors, locations, and crews. From concept to final edit, the Kansas City area film industry handled everything. The filmmakers’ creative responses to the question "What would you do if the world was ending today?" ranged from apocalyptic chaos to hopeful sci-fi, and even tender romance. I loved watching several in a row, enjoying the surprise as each new concept unfolded.
Watch all of the episodes in the series, read bios on the filmmakers, and discover the backstory at the Withered World website. Downloading the films took a little patience, but they’re worth the wait. They’ll leave you wondering, what would I do if the world was ending today?
