What to Expect from a Genealogy Class
August 19, 2014
If you’ve been fiddling around with your family tree for a while and have made a little progress but don’t quite know the next step to take, perhaps a genealogy class is for you!
There are so many types of classes out there these days, for beginners as well as seasoned genealogists. How do you choose the right class to support where you are in your genealogical research? Looking around, it would seem everyone is a genealogist. And with genealogy research being one of the fastest growing hobbies of our time, the landscape can be confusing.
The Midwest Genealogy Center offers many free classes year-round. Our class descriptions will tell if the class is for beginners or more advanced researchers. A good way to choose is just to jump in by taking one class and see if you learn a few things that you didn’t know before. Our experienced instructors will know the latest tricks, shortcuts, and also the conventions of genealogy documentation in order to set you on the right path. Most teachers will use an easy to follow PowerPoint presentation and offer handouts for help with your note-taking. When attending a class, you may bring whatever you need, even a laptop, tablet, or other device.
You will also have an opportunity to talk to the instructor and the other patrons in order to match your needs with the offerings that exist. For example; if you like to do most of your research online for now, a few of our wonderful classes are Beginning Internet Genealogy, Beginning Ancestry Library Edition, and Using FamilySearch. If you've been researching for many years, you might want to begin exploring overseas records with more specialized Irish, German, or Scandinavian classes, which MGC offers a few times per year.
Maybe you have an extensive tree you worked on back in the day before files started becoming more digitized, and you aren’t the most experienced user of the Internet. We can help you get established on one of our genealogy computers and help you navigate around on the Internet. There you will have an opportunity to use several subscription-free databases, such as Ancestry Library Edition, or Fold3, a military database. There is no shame in asking for help; after all, it’s what we do!
To explore our classes or to register for one or more, you may click on the Events link on our website. You may also pick up a copy of our Access Guide at our information desk or obtain a copy of the Beyond the Books Catalog at any MCPL’s branch. Be sure to register for classes because sometimes they do fill up! Beginning this fall, we will feature many of our core classes each month at different times so that everyone can find a class time that fits their schedule.
When you come to your first class, be prepared to set aside a block of time that day. Our classes are usually an hour long, but you may be so inspired and want to explore our center a bit longer!
