Welcome to a Dystopian Society
December 14, 2010
Dystopian literature is a new subgenre for me. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the book that brought this trend to my attention. I didn’t realize this group of books even had a name. I just thought they were some sort of weird violent version of sci-fi.
Well, I was close. Like other science fiction, the books are set in the future. What makes a book dystopian, though, is the fact that the futuristic society has extremely bad living conditions, brought about because of the way we live today. By "extremely bad" living conditions, I mean poverty, social repression, constant warfare, and/or overpopulation.
Below are some of the more popular contemporary and classic works of dystopian fiction. Enjoy!
