"This Was the Best Day!"
December 21, 2012
That is a familiar comment North Platte elementary students make to parents after spending a day with the Living History Group. The students might have just experienced Tall Tales Day, Little House Day, Science Day, Apple Day, or one of several other special days presented to the students by the members of Living History. This dedicated group, approximately 25 members strong, spends thousands of hours a year expanding the classroom experience of North Platte kindergarten through third grade students. According to their statement of purpose, these volunteers "enhance classroom learning, giving it flavor and texture, and make learning fun."
Tuesdays are special reading days. Every Tuesday is "one on one" reading and classroom reading every other week. Just another example of the way these ladies enrich students' lives by helping them realize reading is fun.
Founder Chris Roper got the inspiration for Living History from her parents in North Platte, Nebraska. What began over 20 years ago as a campaign to help students read is still creating lasting memories through “Living History.” If you would like to read more about this group, you will find their story in Landmark People, Stories from Platte County by Bill Hankins.
Ladies, our community owes you a great big "Thank You" for enriching our children’s lives by your service and dedication.
