Venison-It's What's for Dinner

February 15, 2013

Growing up, having venison for dinner never occurred in my household. Common meals in my house were beef, chicken, and fish, so that is what I learned to cook. So it has been quite an experience for me being married to a hunter and having a freezer full of venison meat. I didn't know where to start. I didn't have any recipes for venison, and I knew I couldn't call and ask my mother for advice on preparing it since she's never cooked with it either.

So, I turned to MCPL's website. I was so excited to find the Culinary Arts Collection database. All I had to do was type"'venison" in the search box, and it brought up so much information on this topic. There were articles on how to prepare and marinate it and a variety of recipes, from steaks to stews, to jerky to casseroles, to chops and much, much more. I had no idea how many different ways venison could be prepared.

The first dinner I made for my family was venison stew in the crockpot. I wasn't sure what my kids would think about it and was worried they wouldn't eat it, but they loved it! Who would have thought? Finding information on cooking with venison was so easy using MCPL, and I can't wait to try out another recipe!
