United Nations Day

October 19, 2012

October 24th is United Nations Day, and if you’re like me, you’ve never heard of it. Wednesday is the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, and it is devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organization.

So, what does the UN do? They seem to employ fabulously beautiful and famous goodwill ambassadors like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman. Their members are mirrored in the Rescue Aid Society for which Disney’s Bianca and Bernard work. They sit in large round rooms filled with flags and listen into earpieces that offer words in their native language. But what do they do precisely?

The UN is an international organization founded in 1945 to maintain "international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards, and human rights." There are 193 member countries who work together in "peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and humanitarian assistance."

That’s a big job, and it deserves a special day. Celebrate the ideals and impact of the UN on October 24th!
