Twihards and Twihaters

July 13, 2010

It’s summertime and another Twilight Saga movie has been released. Just you try and escape hearing about how great or stupid the books are and how awesome or horrible the latest movie is. You will fail.

I am not a Twihard by any means, but I love Twilight. My friend’s sister recommended I read Twilight shortly after the second book was released. Within a few hours, I had experienced a new teen world, and was very excited about the series. Yes, I think the teen girl inside of me reacted similarly to other teen readers, but now I have a completely different reason to love the books.

So why do I say I capital L-O-V-E, love Twilight?

Every day a teen comes into the library and asks to check out one of Stephenie Meyer’s books. This is something amazing to witness. The series has created a chance for teens to enter into discussions about characters, plot developments, and writing style, on a scale that has never before been seen. It even gets teens that hate Twilight talking. Debates may begin by focusing on whether you love or hate the series, but they quickly move on to what books you do like, what authors have changed your life, and what are examples of strong female characters. So love it or hate it, let others know why!

What an excellent point, Cass! I personally think Stephanie Meyers' writing is overrated, so this whole Twilight phenomenon is beyond me. But sometimes our personal dislike of something causes us to miss the much bigger, more important picture. Thanks for reminding me of that!
