'Twas the Day After Christmas

December 25, 2012

'Twas the day after Christmas
And all through the house,
The family was silent
As quiet as a mouse.

The family was scattered
From bedroom to basement,
Their eyes slowly widening
In rapid amazement.

Their most favorite gift
From the day just before
Hadn’t been trains or dollies
(which were left on the floor).

The one thing they treasured
And would ne’er replace
Was the key to adventure
Electronically cased.

Johnny was digging
With pirates for treasure.
Sally was meeting
A prince with great pleasure!

Father was scheming
With lawyers and cops,
While Mother was learning
To cook great pork chops.

Grandma was looking
Around in amazement.
“What happened to good
Ole fashioned entertainment!

“Everyone used to
Play dress-up and trains;
But these mini-computers
Will pickle their brains!!”

Sally and Johnny
Said, "Granny, it’s true:
eReaders aren’t toys,
But they can be fun, too!

"We’re reading all sorts
Of fantastic new books!
There are even some stories
You’d like – just look!"

So they showed her the Library’s
Website with glee:
OverDrive Digital books
Were all FREE!!

Granny’s brow remained furrowed,
'Til with one simple click:
A list of new romances
Just waiting to be picked!

Now slightly intrigued
But not quite convinced,
Cause the kids’ fast computer skills
Made her just wince!

So she took the two children
To their branch the next day,
And just after storytime
She was heard to say:

“Now my grandkids are clever,
And they’ve told me about
All these digital books
That are free to checkout.

But I’m not all that great
With electrical gadgets…
Is there someone here
To help me learn a new habit?”

The librarian smiled
And said with great cheer,
“We’ve got several programs
That will make it all clear!”

Granny peered at the list,
Checked it over twice,
And thought the OverDrive class
Would be rather nice.

So she came to the program,
And once it was done
Decided that eReaders
Could be quite fun!

“No more am I limited
To paperback books;
I can read – even listen! –
On my Kindle or Nook!”

And we heard her exclaim
As she drove down the street:
“Happy New Year to all,
Hope you find a good read!”

A librarian who works at RB
Penned a poem full of holiday glee
Putting rhythm to rhyme
She kept it in time
Leaving us filled with awe and envy!

E Books

You can have your fancy "machines", but to my way of thinking, nothing beats a REAL book. It is very frustrating to find that a book is available only in electronic form. Most of the the people I know cannot afford an electronic reading device-especially Grandma!
By the way, I did love your poem!
