Top 5 Manga You've Probably Never Heard Of

April 10, 2012

Tonight our Anime group started talking about all the bazillions of manga series that they have read. These teens are INCREDIBLY well-read, and it became a challenge for them to come up with some great series they've read (or watched the Anime versions of) that they figured no one else would have ever heard of. Here are their recommendations. Let us know if they've stumped you! (Or if you pick any of these up and enjoy them yourselves.)

Top 5 Manga You've Probably Never Heard Of

  1. Nosatsu Junkie by Ryoko Fukuyama -- The main character of this series becomes a model and falls in love with one of her coworkers. You should read it because it is the best representation of first love ever.
  2. Gantz by Hiroya Oku -- People die, then come back and have to play a game where they fight off aliens. You should read it because it is a longer series that will last you awhile.
  3. Yumekui Merry by Ushiki Yoshitaka -- The main character comes from a dream land and is trying to get home. You should read it because the fights are really epic.
  4. Gurren Lagann by Kotaro Mori -- Humans hiding under the surface break free and hijack robots to take back the universe. You should read it because the moon transforms into a galaxy-sized destroyer. In other words, it's awesome.
  5. Bloody Monday by Tadashi Agi -- Hacker kid gets top secret files and is chased down by a Communist government because of his knowledge of a deadly virus. You should read it because it's set in the Cold War which makes it really unique.

Some of these manga series, you can get through MCPL. But others, you'll have to request through Interlibrary Loan using WorldCat (a searching tool that looks for materials from libraries all over the United States). Fortunately, the staff members in this department are AMAZING and can get almost any item you want. Our Anime group teens can attest to that!
