Tips and Tricks for Stretching Your Food Budget
March 26, 2013
I don't know about the rest of you, but I am a junk food junkie! The thought of throwing out all of those stale pieces in the bottom of the tortilla chip bag makes me shudder!!! So, instead of wasting them, I fan them out on a microwave-safe ceramic or glass plate and microwave them on high for about a minute or so. Everyone's microwave is a little different, so test it for a shorter time first. I also like for them to get a little bit browner, so I may add a more little time. Don't let them stay in too long though or they will burn! The microwave causes the chip remnants to crisp up and become edible again. Ta Da! Now you have a refreshing little snack that you thought was meant for the trash!
The above example is just one way to make your budget go further. You can find more ideas in Kate Colquhoun's The Thrifty Cookbook: 476 Ways to Eat Well with Leftovers.
