Time Is a River
January 11, 2011
"It is only in appearance that time is a river. It is a vast landscape and it is the eye of the beholder that moves." Thornton Wilder
The February selection for The 2nd Tuesday Book club is Time is a River by Mary Alice Monroe.
Mia Landan is a thirtysomething breast cancer survivor from Charleston, SC, who after losing her job and her self-confidence, finds her way to Casting for Recovery, a North Carolina-based organization run by fishing guide Belle Carson. Mia also loses her husband when she returns from the trip and finds him with another woman.
Along with the rigors of breast cancer treatment, we learn about the art of fly-fishing and how its principles can heal the soul and bring nature and our place in it into sharp relief.
The story is not only about healing, both physically and emotionally, it is also a mystery. While staying at Belle's cabin, Mia tries to piece together the life of a well-known fly-fisher, who lived in the cabin many years before.
Come join us on Tuesday, February 8 at 10:00 A.M. at the Riverside Branch for our discussion of this book.

Fly fishing-not just for trout
I encourage anyone to try fly-fishing. You don't have to go to exotic locations to catch fish. It works just fine on the fish we have here like bass and sunfish. Of course, a trip to the mountains to catch trout is a great vacation. Just be aware that trout are not the only thing you can fly fish for. In fact, the lowly carp is one of the most exciting fish to catch on the fly. I call it the "Missouri Bonefish".
