Time for the Kick-Off
September 09, 2010
After months of waiting, intrepid fans finally welcome back the beginning of football season, starting September 9th. The sport has come a long way from its beginnings in the 1800's as a sort of hybrid between soccer and rugby. Football was originally a college sport. Yale coach, Walter Camp, is credited with many of the initial changes that distinguished football from soccer or rugby. These changes included the addition of a quarterback and center positions, the standard size of the field, and the system of downs that determines which team gets possession of the ball. Football was also rather violent, some sources document 18 deaths in the first decade. The sport may have died if Teddy Roosevelt had not called on some of the larger schools to save it. This led to the creation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA. The official National Football League was formed in 1920.
On the modern side of football, the Kansas City Chiefs take the field for the first time in the regular season, under the bright lights of Monday Night Football against San Diego on September 13th. Fans can find books and videos about the Chiefs in the our catalog. Of course, you can find other teams in our catalog too, but why bother?
