The Tigers Will Not Sign Autographs

June 07, 2010

Next Monday morning at 9:30, the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is coming to the South Independence Branch and they are bringing a couple of their massive predators. I missed their visit last year, but I heard they brought both a tiger and a panther. Beat that Anime Club!

Anyway, Turpentine Creek has been doing great work for years. Over the last few decades, their refuge in Eureka Springs has given a second chance for dozens and dozens of exotic animals. Many of these animals’ previous owners were surprised to find that "cute" tigers have a habit of turning into adult tigers on a fairly consistent basis. As they say on their website, “Big Cats Do Not Make Pets”.

This is going to be a cool event. A couple years ago I had the opportunity to drive through their refuge in Eureka Springs and was impressed by both the size of their refuge (lions can be real divas when it comes to personal space) and their awesome collection of creatures. Like I said this is going to be a cool event. Everyone should come.

Corrections about Turpentine Creek

Submitted by Tigress on July 17, 2010 - 10:18am.

As a volunteer with Turpentine Creek I wanted to make a correction to the above blog. I didn't want anyone to visit the refuge with a false impression.  The refuge is NOT a drive through facility. If walking along the rocky steep terrain is a problem they do have a tram you can ride to view the habitats but the habitat tour is general a walk along trail as well as the central part of the refuge is a walk through.

Also, instead of dozens and dozens the refuge has actually rescued 100's of cats since opening in 1991. We currently house over 120 big cats!

Hope everyone enjoyed the program as much as they enjoy making the trip up to do them. And hope everyone will be making the trip down soon. We are opening the leopard habitat this weekend so we are all excited about the new addition!
