Those Youngsters from Liverpool

February 18, 2013

You may want to sit down for this.

Did you know that the Beatles' first hit in the USA, “Please Please Me,” was released 50 years ago on February 25, 1963?! Can you believe it? It just doesn’t seem possible.

Then on February 9, 1964, The Beatles debuted on the Ed Sullivan Show. In his introduction, he said, "The city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool." I remember that show with all the screaming, sweaty girls in the audience. Yes, I’d say there was some excitement stirred!

When the Beatles craze swept the USA, I was four-years-old. I would sneak my sisters’ Beatles albums or "45s" when they weren’t home, stack them on the record player, and sing away. We would discuss (and sometimes argue) who our favorite Beatle was. Mine? Paul! (Sometimes it was George if I wanted to be different.)

So, in honor of 50 years of The Beatles, why not revisit some of your favorite songs or videos. You can access these through our new music Freegal Music database or by clicking on one of these links:

The Beatles: the first U.S. visit (DVD)
The Beatles. Help! (DVD)

Enjoy! And, by the way, who was your favorite Beatle?

I came to the Beatles's music after they hit it big. But my favorite was George once I saw "A Hard Day's Night."

Great memories, but I was annoyed that I couldn't watch Walt Disney because my sister had to watch their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.
