That’s for Old People!
January 17, 2017
"That’s for old people!" is a commonly heard phrase when young people hear the word genealogy. The misconception that genealogy is boring or only for old people ends as soon as a youth finds that first document containing a family member. Then genealogy becomes something fun for them.
The Boy Scouts of America actively encourages scouts to become interested in genealogy through their merit badge program. Scouts are asked to complete nine predetermined requirements to receive the Genealogy Merit Badge. Requirements range from completing family group charts to conducting an oral interview.
To assist the Boy Scouts in completing this merit badge, the Midwest Genealogy Center is now offering workshops specifically designed to meet the nine requirements. These workshops are taught by certified merit badge counselors and may be tailored to each troop’s needs. For example, you can complete all requirements in one day or complete specific requirements on separate weeknights throughout a month.
MGC is excited to assist the Boy Scouts with the Genealogy Merit Badge Program and to increase the number of young people exposed to the world of genealogy!
