Tags, Pads, and Gates, Oh My!
August 08, 2014
As some of you may be aware, MCPL is in the process of converting to an RFID tagging system. This means that instead of relying on barcodes, we will be able to use special tags placed inside every Library item to assist in check in, check out, and tracking. Since it is a big process to place a tag on all of our over 3 million items, we will be doing it in stages and closing groups of branches for a week at a time.
Once the branches reopen, you will be able to checkout a stack of items at once. Simply place them on the checkout station pad and, voila, checked out! We are also installing gates on all the doors to get a better count on the number of people entering the branches and to help track any items that the checkout station may not have caught. We know this is a new process, so we expect there will be some growing pains as staff and customers alike get used to the new process.
You can find out more and see the full closing list on our RFID page.
