Surrounded by Opportunities
January 22, 2011
I'm surrounded by books. There's both fiction and non-fiction, and even the picture books are beautiful. They are all so tempting, but I can’t read them all. So many look really good. So the other day, I picked up a fiction book by an author I never read. He's a bestselling author, so I ought to at least sample him, right? I, Alex Cross is the book I picked up by James Patterson. It turns out to be one of the newest books in a series. I also went back and got the first book, Along Came a Spider. Most of his books have those sorts of nursery rhyme titles. I've always wondered about that.
James Patterson's main character is Alex Cross. He is a six foot three police detective; fit, athletic, and oh yes, a psychologist. The character has special training and studies in the area of abnormal psychology and forensic psychology. That’s perfect for being a real asset to the police force chasing serial killers and various psychopaths.
In the digital age, James Patterson has been a tremendously, successful author. His books have sold an estimated 170 million copies around the world. At one time, he had #1 bestsellers on both the adult and children's New York Times list. The author’s website tells of several things he has done to promote reading with both adults and youngsters. The author is also successful in the film arena with books turned into movies like Maximum Ride.
It’s fun to pick up a new author and give them a try. Your local library branch offers an abundance of opportunities to do just that!
