Summer Reading Program is Here Again!

May 17, 2012

Attention, kids and teens! It's time for our yearly Summer Reading Program or SRP. From May 21st through July 31st, children up through the 5th grade can participate in Dream Big...Read!, and teens grades 6 and up have their own program, Own the Night!!

You will need to register online to participate (registration does not open until the 21st), or come in to the branch after the 21st and we can help you register.

With Dream Big...Read!, listeners (those children, approximately 0-6 years of age, who won't be reading on their own) are eligible for a free book after finishing 24 books! Readers approximately 6-11 years old, who will be reading on their own, must finish 360 minutes (6 hours) of reading time before earning a free book. Both listeners and readers can earn three free books over the course of SRP and have the option of selecting a special prize instead of the third book!

Our teen reading program, Own the Night, has undergone major changes this year. Now, instead of having to read for a certain amount of time like the kids, teens are rewarded for writing book reviews. For every review submitted online, participants will receive a "Library Buck." These Bucks can be redeemed for books, prizes, or even be used to pay some library fines!!*

Any questions? Talk to us here at the branch, and we'll be happy to help. You can contact a staff member by phone at 816.630.6721, ask us on Facebook, or come into the Library, and we'll help you in person!

*Of course, you knew there would be some fine print... Library Bucks can be used on fines for overdue items or for replacement Library cards, but not on fines incurred for lost items, damaged items, or for collection fees. We also cannot give change back for Library Bucks, so try not to use a whole Buck to pay off a five cent fine. Save them for something bigger - your Library Bucks will be good all year, even after the Summer Reading Program is long over!
