Summer Olympics
July 26, 2012
The Summer Olympics begin July 27th and continue through August 12th. I enjoy both the winter and summer games, but I think the summer games are my favorite. I especially like gymnastics (both men's and women's), swimming and diving, and track.
This year will be exciting because Maurice Mitchell, a Raytown South graduate, will be on the track team competing in the 200 meter race. Thanks to fundraising efforts in our community, his family will be able to go to London to cheer him on. Another Olympian from our area is Sarah Finnegan. She has moved from St. Louis to the Kansas City area so that she can train at a gym in Blue Springs. She will be attending the Olympics as an alternate for the women's gymnastics team.
I am looking forward to watching Michael Phelps swim again. If he can win three medals, he will surpass the overall record of 18 medals by a single athlete. He is participating in 7 events, so it could happen.
The Library has many books about the summer Olympic Games, the history of the Olympics, and Olympic athletes. Two that you might enjoy are Michael Phelps, The Untold Story Of A Champion by Bob Schaller and Chronicle of the Olympics, 1896 - 1996 by DK Publishing, Inc.
