Summer 2010-Summer of Roscoe

June 29, 2010

Nothing’s bigger than music. Everyone listens to it. I pooled a group of sonic wizards, heads of some of the nation’s greatest institutions of sound and they each gave me five essential summer records, CDs, and cylinders from their respective collections. The results:

Jeff Place –Smithsonian Folkways
1.Woody Guthrie: The Asch Recordings Vol. 1: This Land is Your Land
2.Classic Maritime Music from Smithsonian Folkways
3.Classic Mountain Music from Smithsonian Folkways
4.The Byrds Box Set
5.The Lovin’ Spoonful- Anthology

Steve Weiss-Southern Folklife Collection(UNC-Chapel Hill)
1. The Anthology of American Folk Music
2. Sweetheart of the Rodeo - The Byrds
3. King of the Delta Blues Singers - Robert Johnson
4. Sunrise - Elvis Presley
5. Untamed Sense of Control - Roscoe Holcomb

Chuck Haddix-  Marr Sound Archives (UMKC)
1. Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
2.Giant Steps - John Coltrane
3.Blues and the Abstract Truth - Oliver Nelson
4. Sunday at the Village Vanguard - Bill Evans
5. Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock

Bill Schurk- Music Library and Sound Recording Archives (Bowling Green)
1.Holly in the Hills - Buddy Holly & Bob Montgomery
2.Teen Beat - Carl Perkins
3.The Best of Timi Yuro
4.The Wild Side of New Orleans - Allen Toussaint
5.Dr. Feelgood and the Interns - Dr. Feelgood and the Interns

David Seubert- Project Director, Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project (UC-Santa Barbara)
1.Fourth of July patrol - New York Military Band (with Chorus).
2.Gondolier and temptation rags - Fred Van Eps and Albert Benzler
3.What a time - Polk Miller. Polk Miller and his Old South Quartet.
4.Any rags - Arthur Collins.
5.La mascotte. [Mascotte. Air de Saltarello] - Alexis Boyer.

Put this stuff on hold. I took a chance on Roscoe Holcomb’s An Untamed Sense of Control and I have a feeling I’m going to hang out with Roscoe all summer.

Dylan L.

P.S.
If we don’t have them there’s a good chance WorldCat does.

P.P.S.
You may not be able to put Mr. Seubert’s cylinders on hold but if you click the links you will find audio files streaming all over the place.
