Still Nothing Like a Book

May 05, 2011

I have been reading about and hearing a lot about how wonderful e-books are and how you will always have a good book wherever you go. Well I’m not anti-technology or someone who feels progress is all bad, but for me nothing will ever replace the good old book.

I have seen many young children through the years and still today get all excited when they find a favorite book on the shelf, or when a parent finds just the right book to read to their child. You can just see the excitement in both of their eyes. Once again, it’s my opinion you just can’t get that from an electronic device.

Storytime, whether at the library, school or daycare, is an area I don’t think a storyteller would be able to create an enriching experience with an electronic device. Children become engaged both by the presentation of the story as well as the illustrations in the books. Of course there are exceptions to having a book, such as when the storyteller illustrates the story, either verbally or through their description of the story.

I could go on and on with the debate about electronic versus print media. Both have their place in today’s world, and with your library card, you can enjoy either. Mid-Continent offers eBooks through Overdrive available on the Online Resources page of our website. You will also find electronic versions of magazines, newspapers, and auto repair manuals on our websites. On the other hand, if you’re like me and like reading a good old book, magazine or newspaper, Mid-Continent can satisfy you also. Your library is here for all to enjoy.
