Start Your Own Streak
February 07, 2012
When I read The Reading Promise: My Father and The Books We Shared by Alice Ozma, I knew I wanted to write about this book in connection with the RAFT Program (Reading Aloud Family Time). What a perfect fit!
If you were read to as a child, if you have ever read aloud to a child or wanted to, this book will both affirm and encourage you. The author and her father made a promise to read together every day for 100 days in a row. The promise was dubbed "the Streak." One hundred nights turned into 3,218 nights before "the Streak" ended on the author's first day of college.
In just the way a good read-aloud conveys meaning and understanding, Alice Ozma's memoir imparts to the reader the myriad benefits of sharing a good story with another, especially the bond that can be created. And she does this without ever telling us how or why it is good to read aloud. We discover it within their story. And isn't that what all good stories do?
If you would like to make your own Reading Promise or start a "Streak" of your own, (and if you read this book I'm betting you will) you can visit Alice's website for book suggestions and encouragement. Then sign up for RAFT, read 2 chapter books together, and earn a beautiful copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.
Your Streak is born!
