The Chase by Clive Cussler begins and ends with a scene nearly 50 years after the events of the story when a locomotive is salvaged from a Montana lake. Set in 1906, the Butcher Bandit has been hitting banks, leaving behind a significant body count. Isaac Bell, top detective of the Van Dorn detective agency, is hired to work the case. He quickly identifies the killer, but struggles to catch him in the act.
The story is fast paced with classic Cussler fare; gunfights, beautiful women, parties, and intrigue. There is also a dose of his love of all things mechanical; a turn-of-the-twentieth-century motorcycle, a race car, and railroad cars, all described in loving detail. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 also adds a twist to the plot.
