Kansas City is in between the seasons of the more well-known sports teams like the Chiefs and Royals. However, that doesn’t mean you have to go without your fix of watching two teams duke it out to the tune of Blood, Sweat and Tears. Kansas City is the home to numerous lesser known teams that are just as exciting and just as much fun to root for. Many of them even have taken championships in their divisions. One of my favorites is roller derby. Forget what you knew of the antics from the 70’s, this is a tough physical and mental sport that is becoming a firestorm across the country. Winning the national championship in 2010, the Kansas City Roller Warriors have become one of the most well respected women’s teams in the nation. In addition, there is a newly established men’s team called the Cowtown Butchers that has begun their first season this year. My husband and I have had the privilege to practice with these guys.
In addition, there is a women’s football team called the Storm that went undefeated last season. And if that isn’t enough to wet your whistle for hard hitting local sports teams, there are two rugby football teams, the Jazz, a women’s team, and the Blues, a men’s team.
So as the weather starts inviting you to leave the house more and you’re waiting for your favorite KC sport’s team to take the field, check out some of these lesser known teams. You may soon have a new favorite Kansas City team to cheer for.
