Soup Is On!

November 18, 2011

Fall is here and winter is creeping up on us. The colder the weather, the better I like it. I am assuming some of you would disagree?

Every winter, I think of soup. It takes me back to my childhood. Soup, soup and more soup, what can I say? I looked for a website specifically for soup, but could not find one. This is another good reason to go to your local library. First reason is obvious. Libraries rule. We (I mean libraries in general) specialize in information and have been doing so for over a thousand years.

The library has thousands of cookbooks with soup recipes and books just about SOUP. MCPL has many cookbooks that specialize about any type of food you desire. Wouldn’t it be fun and exciting to try something different? Why not try something like Cajun, Greek, Indian, French, or any other ethnic food that would add some diversity to your pallet. Who knows, you might find a new dish your passionate about. Which leads me to my conclusion, you are never too old to learn something new. Come on in and learn something new.

Chicken

Submitted by Anonymous on December 9, 2011 - 2:57pm.

I'm old fashioned, or maybe just not adventurous, or I guess you could call me to chicken to try new things, but my favorite soup is still homemade chicken noodle soup, the kind that has the big fat noodles and big chunks of chicken that cooked all day on the stove and made the house smell great. I loved that smell coming home from school on a cold day. And a lot of years later I still try to talk my mom into making it for me.

Yea, I did that too. Go to Mom's house and get her to cook something for me when I felt like I needed her to take care of me for a little while.
Now my husband makes chicken and noodles for us. And my son sometimes. He still uses his grandma's recipe. Hey, with them around I don't have to do it. But then there are things my kids want me to make too, when they need a mom fix.

Yum! They all sound great. If we try one every two weeks that would get us through the roughest part of winter. Thanks for the tip. Trying all the soups is daunting. Knowing what to try will be fun.
I have heard of Pho recently. On a cooking show of course.
And I have a great recipe for onion soup I haven't tried yet. It is a Julia Childs recipe.
Now I am looking forward to winter.

SOUP!!!!!

Of course I wouldn't pass up this opportunity to encourage everyone to RUN NOW and get a bowl of Pho, Vietnamese Beef and Rice Noodle Soup, the greatest soup in the history of the world. Don't try to make it yourself, it's a pain to make. Just find a Vietnamese restaurant and enjoy.

In addition to try to get everyone to try Pho, I want to share some other great soups worth a try that you may not have had before:

Tom Yum Gai - Thai hot and sour soup with chicken.
Sopa de lima - Mexican spicy chicken soup with lime.
Miso soup - Japanese miso paste soup with tofu and seaweed, simple and yummy!
Yukaejang - Korean spicy beef soup.
Pappa al Pomodoro - Italian bread soup. Yes, bread.
Oyster and corn chowder - contains bacon. Enough said.

And finally, real (meaning made from scratch, not a packet) French Onion soup with melted Gruyere cheese on top. Serve with crusty baguette and be happy. Bon appetit!
