Some Resources for Identifying Civil War Uniforms
November 29, 2013
If you have a photo of a Civil War soldier and you’re wondering what that insignia on his jacket or hat means, there are books that and websites that can help you figure it out.
For example, Uniforms of the Civil War by Robin Smith and Ron Field gives information about insignias and types of uniforms your ancestor wore, as well as the packs that they carried and much more. The book has a lot of photographs, it and covers both Union and Confederate soldiers.
A Civil War historical interpreter’s costume supply website is also a good source to aid in identification. This site has links to Union and Confederate uniforms.
