Some Pretty Cool Magazines I Never Read Before!

December 19, 2012

I "discovered" three magazines recently: Missouri Life, Creative Knitting, and Everyday with Rachael Ray. We offer all at the Blue Ridge Branch.

I picked up Missouri Life because the cover says, "Happy Holidays Our BEST Recipes and Traditions." I love holiday magazines. They stun me sometimes with easy crafts and fantastic recipes. The cover of Missouri Life rivaled some of the national magazines, and the December/January issue includes tons of information on holiday events happening in our state, including 105 winter festivals. I’m going to read this more regularly.

I like Rachael Ray and watch her cooking shows when I can, but my previous one-time purchase of the Every Day magazine was expensive and fruitless. That December issue was full of food I would never cook and wines I would never drink. This December issue, however, is full of dishes and advertisements that appeal to me. The dog biscuit recipe in the back seems like a safe gift to make for my sister’s puppy.

I’ve seen Creative Knitting on the magazine stands but never purchased it. It offers a variety of patterns and technical instruction for people of all skills levels. We don’t actually carry this magazine at Blue Ridge, but you can access it online using our Hobbies and Crafts Reference Center database. Search by keyword for the kind of pattern you are looking for, or browse for patterns by choosing "Needlecrafts and Textiles."  If you choose the "Periodicals" tab, a list of articles and patterns come up in order by magazine, and the first on the list is Creative Knitting. You will be rewarded with PDF documents that show the magazine’s actual pages, and the pages are in color! Cool!

Our magazine collection is another way the Library stretches YOUR dollars. Please come and enjoy these great resources.
