So, Have You Heard of Upcycling Yet?

January 23, 2012

The word might have you picturing something with wheels and an uncomfortable seat, but "upcycling" is actually the process of taking something that's worn out and turning it into something new! Feeling creative? On a budget? Want to help save the planet? Then you'll love upcycling. Turning a milk jug into a lunch box, a t-shirt into a tote bag, or some burnt-out light bulbs into salt and pepper shakers are all possible by upcycling!

Upcycling has been booming in popularity over the last couple of years, as more people are trying to save money and be environmentally aware. But, as you can imagine, it's been around for a lot longer than that. Taking something that's worn out and remaking it into something useful sounds very "Little House on the Prairie," doesn't it? Of course, these days you can make much more stylish projects than just rag rugs and button lamps!

Whether you're a veteran upcycler looking for fresh ideas, a newbie looking for instruction, or just someone who's curious to see what's possible, the library has what you need! Come on in and check out some of these great books on upcycling:

Create Colorful Aluminum Jewelry: Upcycle Cans into Vibrant Necklaces, Rings, Earrings, Pins, and Bracelets

Refashioned bags: Upcycle Anything into High-style Handbags

Trash-to-treasure Papermaking

Stop Throwing Money Away: Turn Clutter into Cash, Trash into Treasure-- and Save the Planet While You're At It!

And when you make something awesome, be sure to show us! We'd love to see what you've made!
