Snow Creek is Just a Day Trip Away
March 13, 2013
While having dinner with some friends, someone mentioned Snow Creek. I told my husband that we should go up there sometime and see what it is like. So, with all the snow cleared from the highways but still covering the ground, we head for Weston, Missouri to check out the closest ski area to Kansas City. What we found were three ski lifts up to the side of a natural bluff covered with real snow. That day there were five busloads of school kids on an outing, so the lines were fairly long to get on the lift, although it seems to go pretty quickly.
The three slopes were of various height and difficulty, so it appeared to accommodate all types of skiers. We were inside the snack area and viewed the skiers from the highest location to get the best view. Some people are so natural and just seem to glide easily; others took their time and seemed more timid at the task. Of course, it was easy for us to assess this from our comfy view inside. We are not skiers, athletes, or fans of cold weather for more than five minutes. We just wanted to see what Snow Creek was like and pretend we were in Colorado or Tahoe but only had to drive an hour to get there.
It made for a nice day trip on a cold winter's day.
Skiing and Snowboarding Fitness: Reach Your Potential on the Slopes by Mark Hines might be a good book for the skiing enthusiast, and Let's Try Skiing by Susa Hämmerle is a juvenile easy book that your child might enjoy too. Both of these are available through MCPL.
