The Smartphone Just Got Smarter
September 25, 2012
These days, there are a lot of people who couldn’t live without their smartphones. I’m not one of them, of course; losing my phone wouldn’t be fatal, it’d be more like losing a limb or a favorite child.
...Okay, maybe I am addicted to my smartphone; I suppose I can admit it.
One of my favorite things about my phone is the apps. These apps can vary from fun little games to applications that allow you to watch weather radar or even check out library books! That’s right, MCPL has released an app that is designed to enhance your library experience, whether you’re browsing our shelves or sitting on your couch at home.
I’ve been using this app for a few months now, and I’ve got to tell you—it’s fantastic! It’s designed to let you browse or search our catalog from your phone, as well as keep tabs on your library account—including what books you have checked out, any of your holds that are waiting for pickup, and any outstanding fines you may or may not have. But my favorite feature is the self-check function: it lets you check out library books with your phone! All you have to do is scan the barcode with your phone’s camera, sign in like you would to our catalog, and you’re done. Believe me, it’s actually really fun, easy, and surprisingly addictive.
Another awesome feature is the BookLook option, which also takes advantage of smartphones' barcode scanning technology. BookLook lets you scan any book, audiobook, or DVD—from those on your friends’ shelves to those for sale at your local bookstore—and then the app will tell you whether or not we have that item in our collection. This can save you loads of money on impulse purchases, especially if you’re usually inclined to try before you buy.
Now, I’ve rambled on about this app for a while now, haven’t I? Well, I haven’t covered even half of what this magnificent piece of software does. There are also features that allow you to find our branch locations, keep track of special events, download audiobooks, access our Online Resources, read our blogs, and more. I could easily write several pages about the many uses of this app, but I really think you should just download it and try it out for yourself.
Our app is on the App store and android market. Just search for "Mid-Continent Public Library" under apps, and you’ll be sure to find it. It’s also free. So, why not give it a try? Trust me; you’ll love it as much as I do.
