The Run Around
April 08, 2013
I am constantly running around in my car to work, to the store, or to the bank. I also run for exercise. My biggest incentive is my high energy dog, who needs the additional outlet for all her pent up energy.
I started running 20 years ago when I quit smoking. At that time, I ran with my old dog. When she became too old to go with me, I left her at home moping. Shortly after that, I stopped running all together because it was too hot or too cold, or too something. After a hiatus of about 5 years, I started up again, all because of my new dog who really, really needs to burn off her young energy. I found that it’s much like riding a bike – you never forget how – you just get rusty.
To refresh my running knowledge, I turned to my Library for sources to retrain myself. MCPL has subscriptions to the following magazines: Runner’s World, Fitness, Shape, and Self. For books, I perused Run your Butt Off! (No Experience Necessary!), Running for Women: From First Steps to Marathons, Tread Lightly: Form, Footwear, and the Quest for Injury-Free Running, The Woman's Guide to Running: Motivation, Training, Nutrition, Safety, Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running, and The Complete Practical Encyclopedia of Running.
Years ago, I would listen to audiobooks on my cassette Walkman while I ran. These days, I can download audiobooks from our database, OverDrive Digital Downloads, or free music from our Freegal Music database onto my MP3 player.
With spring around the corner, I won’t have any reason to avoid my running regime. I have everything I need: great shoes, great stories to listen to, and a great running companion. Happy running!
