Romance on a Budget

February 08, 2013

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and while you may want to acknowledge a loved one, a strained or tight budget can limit your choices.

If cash is low,
Never fear,
Heigh ho,
MCPL is here!

We are happy to ride to the rescue with selections galore.

A dozen red roses may be traditional, but a single rose in a favorite color can say, "I love you" just as well or better. Another alternative could be to give a miniature rose bush, packets of perennials, and herbs or bulbs, or a gift that keeps on giving for long after Valentine’s Day is past.

There MCPL can enhance the gift with our large selection of how-to books and videos for successful outdoor planting or container gardening for those who are land deprived. If a romantic dinner at an expensive restaurant is not even a remote option, how about one at home; and again, here comes the Library to help save the day.

We have romantic CDs, chick flicks or adventure videos to suit tastes, and cookbooks for the chefs or for the cuisine challenged. How about getting some special takeout and checking out MCPL’s section on table decorating tips to create the needed ambience? Sounds like an effective dinner and a movie night. Don’t forget the popcorn.

If champagne is out of your price range, sparkling cider is just as bubbly.

If children are a factor and spontaneity seems impossible, why not create a coupon to trade babysitting time with family or friends in similar situation to allow for a date night. You can present the coupon with a sentimental card, either bought with care or created at home. We have idea books to get the creative juices going.

If none of the above would appeal to a loved one, maybe there’s a special project or long-awaited, much needed repairs to be done. The famed honey-do list is a popular request here at the Library. There are numerous items for crafts, including woodwork, art, jewelry, or fabric creations. And, don't forget our many DIY books and Research Databases covering  all aspects of home or car problems.

Happy Valentine’s Day to our customers, staff, and our many friends, old and new, throughout our system.
